Alluring aromas of spice, pepper, wild berry and blackberry lead to melted black licorice and game meat flavors on the full-bodied palate, picking up a leathery espresso edge on the finish. Best from 2012 through 2020.

2009 Novy Cellars Gewürztraminer, Russian River Valley
Rating: 91 points 'Editors' Choice'

A wonderful Gewürz. You never know what to expect from this varietal, but in this case the wine is basically dry, and freshly crisp in acidity. The flavors are complex, ranging from oranges, pineapples and honeysuckle to star anise, toffee and the famous spices of Gewürztraminer. There's also a rich, creamy texture.

2008 Novy Cellars Rosella's Vineyard Syrah, Santa Lucia Highlands
Rating: 94 points

Syrah master Novy has given us a beautiful Syrah to drink now with rich lamb, beef and pork dishes, or perhaps a Latin-inspired black bean soup. It's rich, softly lush and dry, and the blackberry, currant, mocha and sandalwood flavors have exciting edges of salty cured meats and freshly crushed black pepper. Really exquisite, but only 263 cases were produced.

A tremendous Syrah that shows how the Highlands aren't just for Pinot Noir. Dry and Peppery, it has big tannins and crisp acidity framing blackberry, black currant, blueberry and dark, unsweetened chocolate flavors. Impresses for richness, complexity and power. Now-2013 -S.H.

Beautiful Syrah, dry, tannic and elegant, with a most pleasurable mouthfeel. Feels full-bodied and chewy, with blackberry, black currant, leather and tobacco flavors, finished in a swirl of Indian spices. Novy is really at the top of their Syrah game. -S.H.

2007 Novy Cellars Judge Family Vineyard Syrah Bennett Valley
Rating: 92 points

Very fine, very rich and very dry, this is a Syrah you can pull out for your best steaks. It has a peppery saltiness that will pair brilliantly with charred beef. Richness comes via ripe blackberries and cherries, as well as from sweet, smoky oak. Terrific now and through 2013. -S.H.

Slow to emerge elements of pepper and game bring solid Syrah credentials to this very deep, well-fruited effort, and there is still a convincing sense of structured tightness as work here that is the hallmark of an ageworthy wine. Its firm, nominally tannic finish does not entirely encourage near-term enjoyment, but there can be no doubt that time will make good things even better and we strongly encourage a wait of several years.

Bright, lively and fairly deep in keenly defined blackberry fruit, this well-balanced bottling is the smoothest of the several new Novy Syrahs, and its combination of richness and vitality make it a wine to watch. It emphasizes fruit over spice and is filled out by nicely fit oak, and, if it is not a brooding behemoth that demands fairly lengthy keeping, it is certain to gain further refinement over the next three to five years.
