Novy Family Wines Current Releases - 2000
Garys' Vineyard Syrah
The 2000 Novy Garys' Vineyard Syrah is truly unique in that we
absolutely love the wine even though we were prepared not to like
it at all. The 2000 vintage was only the second harvest from these
vines, and very rarely do we prefer the second harvest from a vineyard
to the first harvest. Usually, the first year fruit is naturally
better balanced and lower yielding while in the second year, the
vine enters an adolescent stage and tries to produce too much fruit
and too much growth. Fortunately, through a great deal of work in
the vineyard and a very strict selection in the winery we were able
to avoid this and produce a truly fantastic wine!
Gary Pisoni and Gary Franscioni spent an enormous amount of time
in the vineyard during the 2000 growing season. The vines were thinned
extensively several times and a crew was sent through once to do
nothing but position the shoots correctly. This work paid dividends
when the grapes were finally harvested early on the morning of October
24. The sugars were at 24.0 brix and the levels of natural acidity
were exceptional, especially for Syrah. We hired a refrigerated
truck to bring the grapes up from Monterey and upon their arrival
we immediately destemmed them and let them undergo a 96 hour cold
soak. We then innoculated the juice with three different cultured
yeasts-D254, D80, and Grenache. These yeasts are isolated from the
Rhone and produce particularly complex flavors in the resulting
wine. Malolactic fermentation occurred spontaneously in the barrel
and the wine aged, unracked, for 14 months in approximately 40%
new French oak. Finally, the wine was bottled, unfined and unfiltered,
at the end of January.
The 2000 Novy Cellars Garys' Vineyard Syrah is an almost overwhelmingly
rich, jam-filled syrah. The nose is full of ripe red fruits as if
it were a berry compote. In the mouth the wine is all berry, vanilla
cream, and a satin smoothness. Undeniably the most hedonistic Syrah
we have ever made, it will be hard to keep your hands off of this
one.
