Novy Family Wines Current Releases - 2000
Napa Valley Syrah
We are truly delighted with the 2000 Napa Valley Syrah. 2000 isn't
a year which simply "made itself." Instead, it is a year
which required a great deal of work in the vineyard and winery and,
in our case, we even went back to the "blending table"
several times and worked very hard on blending the best wine possible.
After tasting many barrels (and using very few) we came across the
"perfect blend" capturing both the terroir of the Napa
Valley and the drinkability that we want in our Appellation Syrah.
That blend is the 2000 Novy Napa Valley Syrah.
Once again, the grapes for the Napa Valley Syrah came from the
Page-Nord Vineyard in Southern Napa. The grapes were harvested late
in the growing season. On October 20 we harvested the section closest
to the River at a healthy 25.0 brix. The section closest to the
nearby Bed & Breakfast struggled to ripen. We finally picked
it on October 28th at a good 23.5 brix. We destemmed all of the
grapes and fermented them using a combination of indigenous and
cultured yeasts in 1 ton bins and in tanks. Much like last year,
we pressed a portion of the wine to barrel sweet and allowed it
to finish fermentation in oak. This technique, used more commonly
in Australia, produces wines of great textural richness.
The 2000 Novy Napa Valley Syrah shows huge amounts of fruit on
the nose. Rich berry aromas combine with a vanilla, allspice character
making this an utterly stylish wine. In the mouth, however, the
wine reveals itself to possess both style and substance. The fruit
flavors are even more concentrated (akin to a fruit compote) and
are joined by a meaty, slightly peppery character. On the finish
the wine shows a good tannic backbone promising an outstanding future
if cellared.
