Wines Current Releases : 2005 Russian River Viognier
We love aromatic wines! There is nothing more wonderful
than sticking your nose in a glass of newly poured wine and immediately being seduced
by a flurry of enticing, incredible scents. It is no wonder, then, that we love Viognier.
The 2005 vintage is only our second Viognier. The 2004 wine proved to be hugely successful
but the 2005 wine is, in our estimation, even better. The longer, cooler growing season
in 2005 produced ideal ripening weather for the finicky Viognier grape and we were able to
achieve truly ripe flavors at more reasonable sugar levels. The levels of natural acidity
were also better in 2005 but the yields at this Russian River Vineyard (located on Guerneville
Road and owned by Russian Hill Winery) were quite small and the flavors were exceptionally
concentrated.
To retain the pure aromatics and wonderful fruit in the 2005 Novy Viognier we fermented
the wine entirely in stainless steel using a yeast designed to preserve a wine’s natural aromatics.
We also prevented this wine from undergoing malolactic fermentation thus preserving
the wine’s good acid level. Because of this, we did have to filter the wine but did so using“cross-flow filtration” which is, in our experience, a more gentle filtration technique.
The 2005 Novy Viognier possesses aromas of pears, apples, and tropical fruits. With a medium
body and good crisp acidity this wine is perfect for summer drinking. No need towait, this wine is drinking amazingly right now. Enjoy!
