Wines Current Releases : 2004 Rosella’s Vineyard Syrah
The Syrah planted at the Rosella’s Vineyard provides us
with our most interesting, unique, and high quality Syrah each vintage. This became abundantly
clear with the first Syrah vintage from this vineyard when we started blending the
2001 Rosella’s Syrah and, quite frankly, could not come to an agreement on the final blend.
Ultimately, we settled on a small blend that we thought best represented the wine we had in
barrel. It was really good but it tasted so…”different.”
Of course, that wine received a 91 point rating from the Wine Spectator. The success of
Syrah at this cool site has continued ever since. What makes the Rosella’s Vineyard Syrah
so special is the long, cool growing season
along with the remarkable winegrowing skills of Gary Franscioni and Mark Pisoni. This
combination of climate and grower allows the grapes to hang on the vine for an exceptionally
long time without developing any overripe, raisin-like characteristics. Instead you end
up achieving great ripeness and moderate sugar levels, even in a warmer vintage like 2004.
The 2004 Novy Rosella’s Vineyard Syrah displays a beautiful color with a lush texture.
The wine also has good natural acidity and silky tannins that give it great structure and
backbone. This sexy wine has aromas of blackberries, cream, spicy barbecue rub and raspberries.
The mouthfeel is explosive and the finish is long. This wine is great to examine
(and more importantly drink) on its own but, will also go hand in hand withrare red meat dishes.
