Wines Current Releases : 2004 Sonoma County Syrah
Last year’s Sonoma County Syrah may have
been the most successful Novy wine ever. It was named one of the Top 100 Wines of 2004
by the Wine Spectator (it was wine #44 on their list). It sold out at a record pace, in just
under 3 months. Most importantly, it just tasted great.
Thus we are particularly excited to release the 2004 Novy Sonoma County Syrah. Like its
predecessor, it is a blend of Syrah from a number of vineyards throughout the county. The
2004 Sonoma County Syrah is a blend of 38% Judge Vineyard fruit, 21% Unti, 21% Amber
Ridge, 12% Sapphire Hill, and 8% Christensen Syrah. That such disparate parts from Bennett,
Dry Creek, and the Russian River Valleys can pull together and make one tasty and
cohesive wine continues to fascinate us.
The 2004 Novy Sonoma County Syrah shares many of the same flavors as its predecessor
with plenty of plum and boysenberry fruits. It is a bit more complex than the 2003 wine
with a bit of white pepper poking through (probably due to more cool climate fruit) on the
mid-palate. It is also a bit tighter than the 2003 at this stage making us think that 6 months
to a year in the cellar will only make this wine more rewarding.
