Our Wines  :  2005 Garys' Vineyard Syrah

The 2005 Garys’ vineyard syrah is an exotic, dark, brooding wine that shows the true colors of what Santa Lucia Highlands Syrah is all about. The wine has hints of blackberries, leather, tobacco and white pepper. It is very complex on the nose, and the wine has a certain freshness in the mouth that really makes this wine very enjoyable. The acid, and the silky tannins create a nice long finish. Unlike the 2004 vintage, the 2005 growing season was long and cool. For some time we were concerned that the fruit might never ripen. However, the moderate weather and lack of early winter rains allowed us to wait until the last minute to pick the Garys’ Syrah— with harvest finally occurring on November 2, 2005. Despite this late date, sugars were moderate and acidities were the highest since the 2001 vintage. We fermented the wine in a combination of bins and a tank, using 3 different yeasts types. Ultimately, this wine was pressed directly to barrel and we selected only the finest barrels for the final wine. The wine will pair nicely with roasts or lamb dishes-or it will drink fine on its own. This wine will keep getting more and more interesting with time in the bottle. Enjoy for the next 2-10 years.

Editors' Choice Shows the way this vineyard and appellation ripen Syrah so well. Just overpowers the palate with cassis, licorice, leather and dark unsweetened, slightly bitter baker's chocolate, with a potent dose of freshly crushed pepper. So impressive, the perfect expression of great terroir in a great, cool vintage. But it's very tannic. Drink now through 2013.
