2008 Novy Oley Dessert Wine

As many of you know, the Oley Dessert Wine, a sweet Viognier, is our effort to produce a wine in honor of Dianna’s Grandmother, Lillie Novy. The wine is named “Oley” as that was the nickname that Lillie’s husband had for her. Little did we realize that, when we produced the 2008 Oley, that it would be the last vintage made while Grandma Novy was still alive. Grandma passed away shortly after Christmas in 2008. She is missed by all of us.
The 2008 Novy Oley Dessert Wine is a little bit “more” in every way than the 2007. Fermentation began at 35.2 brix with the final wine retaining 14 grams residual sugar, and with a final alcohol of 14.2%. Because this wine doesn’t go thru malolactic fermentation it also retains exceptional acidity with a final pH of 3.32.
More important than the numbers, of course, is how the wine tastes. With lush, apricot, pineapple, and pear notes, and a hint of vanilla, this is a beautiful wine. The sweetness is obviously present, but doesn’t overwhelm the wine as it is surprisingly light on its feet.
