2010 Keefer Ranch Vineyard Chardonnay

At this point in time, we believe this is our most successful Keefer Ranch Chardonnay todate. After a few years of working with the grapes, perhaps we are finally beginning to get an idea of what we can do to best coax the character and identity of the place out of the grapes.

In 2010 we picked the fruit when it seemed ripe to us, October 5, 2010, although the sugars were not particularly high. We whole cluster pressed the fruit to tank, let it settle for 24 hours, and then racked the juice to two smaller stainless steel tanks. Fermentation was entirely in these stainless steel vessels, after which we racked the wine to one-third stainless steel, one-third older French oak, and one-third new barrels. We chose not to do any malolactic fermentation on this wine, but we did stir the wine on the lees occasionally to provide it a bit more richness. It was then bottled in early September, 2010. For those of you who are interested in numbers, this wine is 12.9 percent alcohol with a healthy 3.37 pH.

One of the things we like best about the 2010 Novy Keefer Ranch Chardonnay is the wine's crisp texture (due, undoubtedly, to the low pH). This crispness gives lift to the intense tangerine and pear flavors in the wine and also seems to bring out a bit of a minerality in the wine's mid-palate and finish. We certainly enjoy drinking this wine now, but feel that it will really be singing come summertime.
